As we move into the new decade, this is a wonderful time to reflect on habits that have served us well and maybe ones that aren’t so great. If you take a close look at your driving habits, that’s an area that we could all take the time to reflect upon and find areas that need improving.
The number one bad driving habit that most people not only complain about but also do is using your cell phone while driving. We can’t help it! We HAVE to see who called or quickly read the text that is so important. As human beings, we are wired that way. When we receive a text, it releases dopamine into our system and makes us happy. However, we won’t be happy if we end up in a ditch or worse.
Slow down. Don’t be in such a hurry. Give yourself a few extra minutes so you don’t feel compelled to speed. Take a moment and breathe. Even if you are running late, let it go! It’s better to be late than to be dead. No wants a ticket either!
Turns signals were invented for a reason. Use them. This helps other drivers on the roads know what to expect from you and that gives them time to adjust their driving decisions accordingly.
Don’t be the jerk who rides bumpers. Not only is it terribly annoying, but it’s also dangerous. Without enough distance between you and the cars around you, the likelihood of you getting into an accident increases exponentially. Breathe and back off!
Don’t run that red light. As much as you want to, it usually doesn’t really help you get ahead. As a matter of fact, you’ll most likely find that the person you left behind at that last light is the person who just caught up to you at the next one.
Take time and be aware of yourself and your surroundings. Leave your cell phone in the glove box or back seat where you’re not tempted to reach for it and leave your lunch for a better time where you can enjoy it instead of scarfing it down. Basically, don’t be a jerk out on the roads and you’ll be surprised how much that alone will help you stay safe.
