Welcome to 2021! We hope this year is your best ever, and we hope we can continue to be the service shop you turn to for all your automotive needs. In January’s blog, I’ll be covering the importance of having an ASE-certified technician working on your car.
You may have heard the term, “ASE-certified” or “Master Technician” before and wondered what exactly it referred to? It stands for Automotive Sevice Excellence, the national organization that uses 50 tests to evaluate applicants in their role as mechanics. These are done in several different banks, covering different types of vehicles: Automotive, Medium/Heavy Truck, Collision Repair, School Bus Technician, Transit Bus Technician, and so on.
When a technician is certified in a specific bank, having certifications in all of the independent skill sets needed to work on these machines, they can achieve the rank of Master Technician. When you hear someone referred to as a Master Technician, it usually means they have certifications in Engine Repair, Automatic Transmission, Manual Drive Train & Axles, Suspension & Steering, Brakes, Electrical Systems, Heating & Air Conditioning, and Engine Performance Certification for standard automobiles.
If you were to bring your car to an independent mechanic working out of his own garage, and the mechanic doesn’t have ASE certifications or a Master Technician rank, you have no gauge of their competence with your vehicle. Many mechanics start in the auto repair business without their ASE certifications and work towards it over time under the guidance of a qualified Master Technician. Not having an ASE certification doesn’t mean they don’t have the skill or talent for repairs.
But it does mean that they have not had a single one of their skills checked by an independent auditor to assess their abilities and fitness to purpose. They may have a license to practice as a mechanic, but they are unaccredited in the standard that North American repair shops agree upon. They may be experimenting in how to fix your car instead of actually knowing (with experience, training, and testing) how to do it.
At Larry’s Independent Service, we have three Master Technicians working on your automobile. Chris, Paul and Larry have 90 years of mechanic experience among the three of them. There is little they have not encountered in their 90 years. Their Master Technician titles are your assurance that they have been vetted at their jobs and found to be up to all the challenges your car represents.
